Hi, I’m Helen. I’m a mum of two boys, one of the founders of The Mummas Village, and the person you’ll find waiting for you if you book a class in Godalming.
I’ve been teaching baby and toddler classes since 2017, when my eldest was still a baby. Going to classes with him quickly made me realise that not all baby classes are created equal! There were some we both loved and couldn’t wait to go to each week (spoiler: they were taught by Steph, who is now my business partner), and others where I felt awkward, uncomfortable or even judged. By the time my son was nine months old, I’d retrained and started teaching classes myself, with a promise to give the grown ups in the room as much care and attention as the babies.
I love being a mum. It brings me SO much joy, but it has also been the hardest, loneliest and most exhausting thing I’ve ever done. I know I’m not alone in finding both of those things true at once. That’s why I want you to be able to tell me about your rubbish morning or the lovely thing your baby did that week. Arrive late because of a poonami. Feed your baby, sit and watch, sing every song or none of them. However you turn up, I want you to know you’ll be welcome.
And I hope you’ll get to know the people sitting beside you, too. I make space in every class for parents to chat, because having people around you can make such a difference. You never know if the person you sit down next to might become your future best friend!
As for the little ones, the joy bringers, I never get tired of watching them discover their bodies, their voices or their feet. I’m lucky enough to have families come back with second and third babies, so I get to see the baby who once slept through massage become the toddler who knows every song and reminds me about the stickers. Watching them grow into proud big brothers and sisters, and getting to know the whole family along the way, is a total privilege and one of the very best things about my job.
So whilst I can’t promise I’ll always remember every word to every song, I can promise you will ALWAYS find a warm welcome, a few giggles and a class full of heart, with as much room for you as there is for your little one.
